Each April, Global Volunteer Month aims to shine a spotlight on individuals who give back to their communities by dedicating their time and passion to helping others. More than 250 volunteers shape our visitors' experience in countless ways, lending their unique perspective to the 9/11 narrative. We are so grateful to all of them for the work they take on to ensure this remains a sacred place of remembrance.

Docent Maria Jaffe took some additional time to answer a few questions about her volunteer work at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.

How long have you been at the Museum?
11 years.

What led you to volunteer here?
My desire to honor the fallen firefighters who were killed on 9/11. They put their own lives at risk to save others. My dad is a retired NYC firefighter, and I'm eternally grateful that he is still with us today.

Can you share a meaningful interaction you've had with a guest?
I've had many meaningful interactions with guests from across America and many other countries through the years. What stands out the most is their genuine concern and empathy for what we all went through here in New York on that tragic day.

What do you hope visitors take away from their trip to the Museum?
I hope they leave with a profound understanding of the events that took place on that fateful day and an appreciation for the selfless heroism that our first responders exhibited.

What would you say to encourage others to volunteer too, either here or somewhere else?
Volunteering is a meaningful, rewarding, and heartwarming way to “give back” to society. I am grateful for the opportunity to do so.
